Iron Availability in Soils

The amount of plant-available iron in the soil is often much lower than the total iron content. In neutral or alkaline soils, the availability of iron is even further reduced. Iron deficiency becomes more pronounced in over-limed soils and in the presence of heavy metals. High levels of manganese can also induce iron deficiency.

The accompanying graph shows the effectiveness of different iron chelates at various soil pH levels:

  • Fe-EDTA: suitable for foliar applications and acidic soils.

  • Fe-DTPA: recommended for soilless cultivation (e.g., rock wool, peat) and neutral soils.

  • Fe-EDDHA: ideal for alkaline soils with pH 8 and above.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency

Iron is immobile within the plant; therefore, deficiency symptoms appear first on young leaves as interveinal chlorosis (yellowing between the veins). In cereals, it often appears as alternating yellow and green longitudinal stripes along the leaf blade.

Crops Sensitive to Iron Deficiency

Fruit trees, vegetables, field crops, citrus, apple, pear, peach, plum, and ornamental plants are especially susceptible to iron deficiency.

Recommended Dosage

Crop Type Application Rate
Young seedlings 10–20 g / plant
Young fruit-bearing trees 50 g / tree
Mature trees (normal yield) 80–100 g / tree
Mature trees (high yield) 100–150 g / tree
Citrus (large trees) 150–200 g / tree
Vineyards (per vine) 10–20 g / vine
Ornamentals (e.g. rose, carnation) 500 g / da
Annual/perennial flowers (e.g. chrysanthemum, gerbera) 600 g / da
Strawberry, raspberry 500–1000 g / da
Vegetables 250–300 g / da
Field crops 250–300 g / da

Directions for Use

FERROSYN should only be applied through the soil. Around the canopy projection of the tree, a circular trench of 15–20 cm depth should be dug. The recommended dose per tree should be applied into the trench either in dry form or diluted with water. The trench is then covered with soil and irrigated. The product is absorbed by the roots and translocated to all parts of the plant.

If applied through drip irrigation systems, 250 g per decare of FERROSYN should be mixed with water and administered accordingly.

Timing of Application

FERROSYN should be applied at the first signs of iron deficiency. The most effective application period is early spring, before bud break. The recommended dose may also be split into two applications:

  • Half before bud break,

  • Half after flowering, during the early fruit development stage.
